NOSIOLA

NOSIOLA

Synonyms: Nosiola Gentile, Dall'Occhio Bianco, Spargelen, Durella.

Historical Notes: there are not historical mentions, however it is believed that this grape variety, widely grown in Trentino, as it is today, has been cultivated from at least the beginning of the last century. In Trentino, it is certainly the most ancient white-berried grape grown, and preceded by decades the arrival of the more prestigious French and German names which were subsequently introduced. Tradition attributes the etymology of the name to the similarity of the berries nearing maturation to the color and the shape of hazelnuts ( nocciole) in Italian.

Characteristics: a leaf slightly smaller that the average, pentagon shaped, with three lobes, with a smooth upper surface. Medium-sized cluster, compact, elongated, cylindrical, a little narrow and sometimes with wings. Medium- sized berries, spherical, of a regular shape, with a persistent navel; a yellow-greenish colored skin, sometimes golden with an average bloom.

Vigor: medium.

Productiveness: abundant, but irregular.

Maturation: end of September, beginning of October.

NURAGUS

NURAGUS

Synonyms: Meragus, Abbondosa, Nur, Trebbiana, Axina de Margiai, Axina de Popurus, Granazza or Garnaccia

Historical Notes: held by many experts to by an indigenous Sardinian grape variety, while others hold that it arrived in Sardinia when the island was under Phoenician domination. Its name appears to derive from "nuraghe"( the fortress/housing complexes of the ancient inhabitants of Sardinia).

Characteristics: medium- sized leaf, with five lobes and rarely with three lobes. The cluster is medium to large sized, either compact or fairly tight, rarely loose, cone-shaped or cylindrical-shaped, often with wings and pyramid shaped (similar to an upside down" Nuraghe", perhaps from whence its name). Medium-sized berry, sub-ovale or flattened and sometimes round, with golden yellow colored skin which when ripened it takes on pink or bright red streaks.

Vigor: medium.

Productiveness: abundant and consistent.

Maturation: end of September, beginning October. In Sardinia it is the last grape variety to be harvested
