Synonyms: Perricone is the name by which it is known in the Palermo area , while in the area around Trapani it is called Pignatello and is mistakenly called Nerello Cappuccio in the Agrigento area. In the past, it was also known as Perricone Nera as a synonym.

Historical Notes: of uncertain origin, even if cultivated in western Sicily from time immemorial: there are traces of it being grown on the slopes of Vesuvius.

Characteristics: medium- sized leaf, pentagonal, with three lobes, in a few cases with five lobes, smooth upper surface with dark green color. Medium-sized cluster, cone to pyramid shaped, sometimes elongated, compact, with a very pronounced side bunch. Medium-sized berry, spherical, thick skin with good resistance to breaking, of a dark blue color, with a rich bloom.

Vigor: outstanding

Productiveness: average and consistent.

Historical Notes: this vine variety is grown cultivated in the Valle d'Aosta which some hold to an indigenous variety while for others instead, it comes from Burgundy.

Characteristics: medium large leaf, three lobes, occasionally with five, smooth upper surface, dark green. Medium to small cluster, average compactness, with a truck-pyramid shape, with one or two side bunches. Small berries, round, with a thin skin, of a reddish-blue-purple color, with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: rather elevated.

Productiveness: considerable and regular.

Synonyms: Uva del Friuli, Piccolito, Piccolito del Friuli.

Historical Notes: this has been cultivated in Friuli (northeastern Italy) for more than two centuries and has always been held in great esteem. Its name comes from the small (piccolo) size of its clusters and berries. Today, it is principally grown in on the hills around Cividale and the small quantity of the grapes is due to the exceptionally poor pollination and reduced flowering in the vineyard giving it its characteristic features.

Characteristics: Medium-sized leaf, pentagonal, with three or five lobes. The leaf has a smooth and opaque upper surface, of a light green color. Small clusters, pyramid-shaped, sometimes with a shoulder or side bunch with small grapes. Normally each cluster has only 15-30 berries. The berries are small, ellipsoidal, with a robust skin, of a golden green color. The skin is transparent and a bit speckled, with a rich bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: very scarce.

Synonyms: Piede di Colombo, Pe're Palummo, Palumbina Nera, Piedepalumbo, Strepparossa.

Historical Notes: its origins are very ancient. It is held to have already been identified and praised by the Roman naturalist Pliny, in his work "Naturalis Historiae". Currently the grape is especially grown in the provinces of Naples, Caserta and Salerno.

Characteristics: medium-large leaf, almost orbicular, with five lobes, with a smooth upper surface. Large cluster, with side bunches or shoulders, of average looseness. Medium large berries, slightly flattened, with a thick robust skin, with a rich bloom of a vivid reddish purple color.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: abundant and consistent.

PIGATO

Synonyms: are unknown. Some hold that Pigato owes its name to the dialectal word "pigau", meaning spotted, or even from the Latin "picatum", wine flavored with pitch in the times of the Romans.

Historical Notes: this grape variety, according to some experts, originally arrived in Liguria from an ancient variety grown in Thessaly (Greece), approximately toward 1600.It is especially grown in the Ligurian Riviera of Ponente, in the province of Savona, on the Albenga flatland and in the valleys of Arroscia.

Characteristics: medium-sized leaves, pentagonal with five lobes, and a smooth upper surface. The clusters are medium-sized cluster, fairly compact, short, cone"shaped, simple or with side bunches. The berries are medium- sized, flattened spheroid, skin of average thickness, with a rich bloom, of a golden-amber color when it is exposed to the sun. The grapes are speckled.

Vigor: medium high

Productiveness: abundant and constant.

Synonyms: Alionzina, Aglionzina, Pignolo, Pignolino , while it has mistakenly confused with Pinot Bianco ( Pinot Blanc) and Riesling Italico.

Historical Notes: there are not precise written records about this wine. Some references to the "Pignole grapes" were written by Tanara (1654). It has certainly been grown on the hills of Bologna for over a century. Its first official recognition came from the Ministerial Decree of 18/09/1978, and has been the subject of confusion among nurserymen and wine growers who have mistaken it for Pinot Bianco as well as Riesling Italico.

Characteristics: pentagonal, three lobes, longer than it is wide, with a light-green colored upper surface marked by veins. Medium sized cluster, long, almost cylindrical, rather tightly put together, rarely with side bunches. Average sized berries, slightly ellipsoidal, with thick skin, with a rich bloom, of greenish golden yellow color.

Vigor: elevated.

Productiveness: not elevated, but constant.

Synonyms: Borgogna Bianco, Pinot Blanc, Klevner, Weissburgunder, Weisser Burgunder

Historical Notes: a grape variety of high nobility and of ancient origins, certainly going back to Roman times. It is very widely grown in France, and was first observed in Burgundy. It is belief that it is white mutation of Pinot Gris which is itself a mutation of Pinot Noir. This grape variety is currently widely grown in Italy especially in the northern regions.

Characteristics: average leaf, but also smaller, pentagonal, with a rounded edged, smooth upper surface, deep green blistery, shiny. Small clusters, approximately twelve centimeters (five inches) long, cylindrical, rather compact and often with a wide defined shoulder. Medium-small berries, spheroid; thin and tender skin, of an intense golden yellow color when ripe.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: discrete and regular.

Synonyms: Pinot Gris, Pinot Burton, Pinot Beurot, Tokay d'Alsace, Malvoise, Gris Cordelier, Fauvet, Auvernat Gris, Petit Gris, Rulnder›, Grauer Riesling, Tokayer, Borgogna Grigio.

Historical Notes: originated in Burgundy, even it is no long very much grown in France today. The introduction into Italy is due to a Piedmont grower who began to grow it in the hills of Alessandria and Cuneo around 1820. Like Pinot Bianco ( Pinot Blanc), Pinot Grigio (Pinot Gris ) originated from the mutation of Pinot› Nero (Pinot Noir), to which it is genetically close.

Characteristics: small or medium sized leaf, rounded edges, with three lobes, colored dark green. Small clusters, cylindrical, very compact, sometimes with a very evident side bunch. Small berries, ovoid, often with wings, a robust skin, of a color (when fully ripened) greyish-pinkish-auburn, irregular, with a rather rich bloom.

Vigor: between discreet and good.

Productiveness: discreet and regular.

Historical Notes: it is the father of the noble Picot family, a house of ancient French origins, but the offspring of the Roman colonizing of the Rhone Valley, when its soldiers brought with them cuttings of the vine in order to recreate the conditions of life that they left behind in the fatherland. A Roman-Gallic grape variety, Picot Nero gives its best at high latitudes (around the 50° parallel), where it produces famous wines. When it is transferred further south, it no long meets the growers' expectations. Within this variety there are two basic kinds: a Picot Nero ( Pinot Noir), similar to that grown in Champagne, a more productive variety, suitable for wine wines and sparkling wines (either alone or cut with other white wines) and another Picot Nero, similar to that grown in Burgundy, which is more suitable for making red wines.

Characteristics: average or even smaller than average sized leaves, rounded edges, and with three lobes, the upper surface is dark green, blistery and opaque. The clusters are small, 12-15 centimeters (4 to 6 inches) long, cylindrical, often with side bunches, a bit compact. Medium sized berries, spheroid or slightly oval; with a skin which is resistant to breaking, a bit thick, of bluish to black color, with a rich bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: discreet.

Synonyms: Primativo, Primaticcio, Morellone ,Uva di Corato, Zagarese, Primativo Gioia.

Historical Notes: its denomination derives from the precociousness of its maturation. Its origin is uncertain, while it was introduced into Apulia by the Benedictine monks, who introduced it into the Gioia del Colle area in the 17th century. However, it is widely grown today in the provinces of Taranto, Brindisi, Lecce and Bari. It is also quite prized and widespread in California, where it is known as Zinfandel, and is used indistinctly for red wins, for nouveau red wines, rosés and as the base for (white) sparkling wines.

Characteristics: average sized leaf, pentagonal shaped, smooth upper surface, dark green color, opaque. Long cluster, with a cylindrical to cone shape, of average compactness, with one or two shoulders or side bunches. The berries are of average size, spherical; the skin is of average thickness, dark purple to blue, with a heavy boom.

Vigor: medium.

Productiveness: prolific, but not very consistent.
