Synonyms: Glera, Serprina, Prosecco, Balbi, Prosecco, Tondo, Prosecco Lungo

Historical Notes: some experts ( Dalmasso›, 1937), hold that this grape variety has existed since the era of the ancient Romans and its history is confounded with of Pucino, the famous wine lauded by the Empress Livia in the Roman epoch.

Characteristics: medium-large leaf, pentagonal, cuneiform, with three lobes and sometimes five, hairless upper leaf, with is crimped and furrowed. Average sized berries, elongated, with side bunches, loosely put together, pyramid shaped. Medium-sized spherical berry, with a rich bloom, a golden-yellow color, a bit spotted, thin skin, rather resistant to breaking.

Vigor: considerable .

Productiveness: from good to outstanding. Excessive in the hills of Colli Euganei.

PRUGNOLO GENTILE (Sangiovese grosso)

Synonyms: Pignolo, Tignolo, Uva Tosca, Uva Canina.

Historical Notes: its origins can be traced back to the Sangioveto variety, which it differs from in some aspects. It is held to be indigenous to the commune of Montepulciano, in the province of Siena and was already described in the 18th Century as "Pigniuolo Rosso".

Characteristics: medium-sized leaf, with five lobes, and a smooth upper surface. The clusters are medium-sized, in the shape of an elongated cylinder. The clusters are compact and have side bunches. The berries are medium-large, and ovoid. The skin of the berries is thin but resistant to breaking, of a blue-purplish color, covered with a rich bloom.

Vigor: good

Productiveness: high.

Synonims: Friularo, Rabosa Nera, Raboso Nostrano.

Historical Notes: it would appear to be an indigenous grape of the Trevisio Plain. At the beginning of the 17th Century, from Friuli, as the territory going from Istria up to the Piave river was then called, the grape was also introduced on the Po River Valley, taking the name of "Friularo" (from Friuli). It was mentioned in serveral 17th and 18th Century documents of the Venetian Republic.

Charatteristics: the leaf is medium-sized, pentagonal, and cuneiform shaped, with three lobes and sometimes five. The upper surface is opaque and crimped as well as furrowed. The bunches are medium-large, elongated, and pyramid-shaped. The clusters have side bunches or shoulders, and are loosely put together. The berries are medium-sized, spheroid, and of a golden yellowish color. The skin is thin but rather resistant to breaking, and covered with a rich boom.

Vigor: considerable .

Productivity: from good to abundant and consistent.

Synonyms: Raboso di Verona, Terrano d'Istria.

Historical Notes: its origin is uncertain, it was diffused throughout in the Treviso area at the end of the last century, by a certain Mr. Veronese, from whom it took the name.

Characteristics: the leaf's size is larger than the average, pentagonal, cut by sinuses into five or seven lobes. The upper surface is hairless, slightly smooth, and of a dark green color. The cluster is large, and cylinder shaped, with a pronounced side-wing nearly as large as the principle pendant, loosely put together. Bluish-black medium-sized spherical berry, with a thick skin which is resistant to breaking.

Vigor: considerable .

Productiveness: good and consistent.

REFOSCO DAL PEDUNCOLO ROSSO

Synonyms: often confused in the past with other grape varieties: Terranno del Carso, Terrano d'Istria, Tefosco del Carso, Tefosco d'Istria, Tefoscone, Tefosco di Faedis, Tefosco di Rauscedo.

Historical Notes: It is an ancient Friulian grape variety with well-defined characteristics. It was already known in the 17th Century, and in the last few years, has enjoyed a popularity in all the region, substituting other Refosco varieties which were perhaps better yielders, but which had fewer merits.

Characteristics: a dark green leaf that is almost large, approaching the round form, pentagonal, with three lobes, with a smooth, hairless upper surface which is crimped and furrowed. The cluster is large, long, with many side bunches, and loosely put together, taking the shape of a pyramid. The berries are medium-small, round, with a thin, rather sturdy, of an intense, opaque, blue color, with a rich bloom

Vigor: outstanding.

Productiveness: good and consistent.

Synonyms Rebolla, Ribolla, Ribolla Bianca, Raibola, Ribuole, Ribuèle in Friuli, Rebula in Slovenia.

Historical Notes: The gape variety is of ancient Friulian origins, as witnessed by different documents dating from before 1300. Currently, it is very widely grown in the hills of the wine-making country of the provinces of Udine and Gorizia.

Characteristics: it is an average-sized leaf, with rounded edges, tending toward the round form, with hints of three lobes. The upper surface is smooth and hairless, and of a light green color. The clusters of a medium-small size, taking a cylindrical or pyramid like form, rarely with side bunches, and of average compactness, The berries are medium-large, slightly flattened, with a skin which is resistant to breaking, not thick, of a yellowish color, speckled with a rich bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: good and consistent.

Historical Notes: there are not certain data concerning its origins, even as regards its introduction although it probably reached Italy from some Central European country toward the end of the last century.

Characteristics: Average-sized leaf, almost towards the round form, or with three lobes ( or five lobes but barely visible); the upper surface is smooth and light green in color. The cluster is small, squat, and tightly put together, cylindrical in shape, often with a side bunch The berries are smaller than average, spherical, with a thin, sturdy skin, of a golden-yellow-greenish color, covered with a rich bloom and it a persistent navel.

Vigor: medium.

Productiveness: discreetly abundant.

Synonyms: Rheinriesling, Gewürztraube, Reno, Weisser Riesling, White Riesling, Johannisberg.

Historical Notes: The grape variety is most likely from the Rhine Valley, where it is still grown today. It was introduced into Italy in the last century however it was not widely used, perhaps because of it scant yields, even if this is increasing slightly.

Characteristics: large or medium large leaf, three rounded lobes and cut by small teeth, with the upper surface crimped and furrowed, and of an intense green color. The cluster is small, compact, even a bit squat, taking on the cylindrical-pyramid like shape. The berries are small, spheroid, with a skin of an average firmness, with a deep golden color and small specks.

Vigor: from average to considerable.

Productiveness: discreet.

Synonyms: none known. It is there held to be indigenous to the zone.

Historical Notes: the first documentation goes back to 1882. Its origins are unknown, even if it is believed to be indigenous to the Verona area. It is a grape variety that adapts itself well to all terrains, is resistant to drought, and even lends itself to raisining, both on the plant as well as on drying grates.

Characteristics: pentagonal shaped leaf, of average sized, deeply cut by sinuses into five lobes, with a smooth, hairless upper surface and of a light green color. The cluster is typically pyramid shaped, with one or two wings, of average compactness. The berries are average-sized, of a blackish purple color, a sturdy skin covered with a heavy bloom..

Vigor: very vigorous.

Productiveness: good and consistent.

Synonyms: Rossese di Ventimiglia, Rossese di Albenga.

Historical Notes: the vine variety is probably of French origin. It would appear that it was imported in to Liguria by the militia men of the Doria family, who owned a castle in Dolceacqua as early as 1270.

Characteristics: fairly large leaf, with five lobes, smooth and hairless upper surface, of a light green color. The cluster is of average sized, with a truck-cone like form, with shoulder, of average compactness. The berries are medium -sized but occasionally less, round or sub-ovoid with a rather thin skin, of dark red-purple color with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: abundant

Productiveness: good and fairly elevated.
