Historical Notes: typical grape variety from Valpolicella (Verona), where it results as having been grown from distant ages.

Characteristics: medium-sized leaf, pentagon shaped, wider than longer, with five lobes. Medium-small clusters, squat, pyramid shaped, with side bunches, a bit tightly put together. Medium sized berry, ovoid, with a thin skin of red-purple color.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: discreet, but consistent .

Vigor: medium.

Productiveness: good and consistent.

Historical Notes: an indigenous Umbrian grape variety, which has been grown for centuries on the hill sides of the communes of Montefalco, Bevagna, Castel Ritaldi, Giano dell'Umbria, Gualdo Cattaneo.

Characteristics: medium-sized leaf, with three lobes, sometimes with five, with a light green upper surface. The clusters are medium-sized to small, taking a cylindrical or almost cone shape, with side bunches, and somewhat loosely put together, with a skin that is nearly black and covered with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: medium.

Productiveness: Average.

SANGIOVESE

Synonyms: two families of Sangiovese grapes are known: one with a large berry or which is also called dolce (sweet) and gentile (well-bread), whose synonyms are indeed Sangiovese Grosso, Prugnolo Gentile, Brunello di Montalcino; the family has small berries, and is also called forte (strong) or montanino (Tuscan for from the mountain and sometimes meaning rough) and among the various synonyms, Cordisco, Morellino, Uva Tosca, Primutico, San Vicetro, Sangiovese dal Cannello Corto di Predappio.

Historical Notes: the Sangiovese is one of the most ancient Italian grape varieties, and is certainly one of the most widely grown as well as the grape which quality-wise offers the best wines in Italy. All ampelographers agree that the grape originated in Tuscany.

Characteristics: medium-sized leaf, longer than wide, with five or three lobes, the upper surface is smooth and hairless, of a light green color. The cluster is of medium-large sized, but also can also be small according to the variety, compact, taking a cylindrical-pyramid form, winged with one or two side bunches. Medium-sized berries, flattened, almost ellipsoid, with a substantial skin, of a blackish-purple color with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: outstanding

Productiveness: considerable.

Synonyms: Spergolina, Pellegrina.

Historical Notes: the grape vines originated in France, and more precisely in the Bordeaux. It was introduced to Italy in the last century.

Characteristics: medium-sized leaf, rounded edges, with three or five lobes, the upper surface slightly crimped and furrowed, of an intense green color. The cluster is medium-small, taking a cylindrical form, winged with two small shoulder, compact. The berries are medium-large, sub-round, with a thick skin, of a golden-green, with speckled, with a rich bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: good and consistent.

Synonyms: Schiava Piccola and Schiava Media, Kleinvernatsch, Mittelvernatsch, Rotervernatsch.

Historical Notes: around the 13th century grape vines were described as schiave (slaves) which were then in contrast to the "maiores" (major) or "maroche" grapes which were trained high, schiava were trained low in rows and tied and entwined with other vines. This name therefore indicated grape varieties that were very different from each other. This specific grape "Schiava Gentile del Tirolo", appears in the Molon's book (1906) and according to Rigotti (1932) it came from Alto Adige.

Characteristics: the leaf is larger than the average, with rounded edges, with three lobes or tending toward the round form, dark green, opaque. A medium-sized cluster, with one side bunch, and loosely put together. Medium-sized berry, with a thin skin, breaking easily, of bluish-purple color.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: of average abundance and consistent.

Historical Notes: around the 13th century grape vines were described as schiave (slaves) which were then in contrast to the "maiores" (major) or "maroche" grapes which were trained high, schiava were trained low in rows and tied and entwined with other vines. This name therefore indicated grape varieties that were very different from each other.

Characteristics: medium-sized leaf, pentagonally shaped, with three lobes or tending toward the round form, with an opaque, green upper surface, a bit crimped and furrowed. The cluster is medium-sized, assuming the pyramid shape, often with wings, solidly put together. Medium-sized berries, slightly flattened, of a bluish-violet color, with a rich bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: of average abundance and consistent

Historical Notes: around the 13th century grape vines were described as schiave (slaves) which were then in contrast to the "maiores" (major) or "maroche" grapes which were trained high, schiava were trained low in rows and tied and entwined with other vines. This name therefore indicated grape varieties that were very different from each other.

Characteristics: large-sized leaf, pentagonal, with three lobes, an upper surface which is marked by veins, crimped and furrowed, opaque green in color. The cluster is large, somewhat long, taking on a cylindrical to cone-like trunk shape, with side bunches, tightly put together. The berries are large, irregularly spherical, tender skin, of a bluish-black color covered with a rich bloom.

Vigor: considerable.

Productivity: consistent but not abundant.

Synonyms: Ribolla Nera, Pocalza.

Historical Notes: it is an old Frulian grape variety, certainly indigenous, originating from the Prepotto area, and is grown in the Cividale area. The name Schioppettino, most likely comes from the fact the wine, which has an elevated fixed acidity, when bottled young, completes the fermentation in the bottle, becoming slightly sparkling, giving the impression that the carbon dioxide was exploding (scoppiare = explode in Italian). From whence the sound, almost homatopeic "Schioppettino".

Characteristics:average-sized leaf, with five lobes, with a smooth upper surface. The cluster is rather large, taking on a cylindrical shape, elongated, with one or two evident side bunches, of average compactness. The berries are flattened or somewhat ellipsoidal, with a bluish-black, rather thick and substantial skin covered with a rich bloom.

Vigor: Outstanding.

Productiveness: good and rather consistent.

Historical Notes: this grape variety is especially grown in France, in Bordeaux, where it is used to make the famous Sauterne wines. In Italy it is not yet very commonly grown.

Characteristics: average-sized leaf, reniform, with either three or five lobes, opaque, an intense green upper surface, slightly crimped and furrowed. The medium-sized cluster, with a side bunch, squat, cone-shaped, a bit tightly put together. Medium-sized berries, with a thick, sturdy, golden-yellow skin covered with a rich bloom

Vigor: good.

Productivity: good and consistent.
