SUSUMANIELLO

SUSUMANIELLO

Synonyms: Somarello Rosso, Zingariello.

Historical Notes: its origins are certainly from Dalmatia; it is only grown in the area around Brindisi. This should not be confused with the Somarello Rosso, which is grown in the area of Bari. It owes its name to its great productiveness as its canes are burdened down with the clusters like a somaro (donkey in Italian).

Characteristics: medium-large leaf, with a smooth shiny upper surface. The cluster is medium sized, tightly put together, taking an elongated pyramid shape without side bunches. Rather large berries, roundish, regular, of a very intense dark blue color, with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: abundant, but only when young.

Productiveness: very prolific. As years go by productiveness and vigor fall.

Maturation: the first half of September.
