FALANGHINA

FALANGHINA

Synonyms: Fallanghina, Falanghina Verace, Uva Falerna, Falerno Veronese, Biancuzita.

Historical Notes: the information we have of this variety are fairly recent and in any case are not earlier than for the year 1825. Nevertheless it can be asserted that this grape variety has often been confused with others, but growers have always been advised to plant this grape variety as it has the great quality that the wine made from its grapes maintains its fine sensory qualities unaltered, wherever the wine making zone is. Currently it is especially widely grown in Campania. It finds its most suitable habitat on the Island of Procida, in the zone of Campi Flegrei and in the area of Sannio, where it seems to have already been cultivated in ancient Roman times.

Characteristics: a medium to small sized leaf, cuneiform, rarely orbicular, with three lobes and less frequently with five lobes, smooth and with a hairless upper surface, which has green veins running through it and reddish streaks. The cluster is long to average in length, medium-large in size and tightly put together. The cluster is cylindrical and sometimes cone-shaped with a short side bunch. The berries are average in size, spheroid and regular; with a pinkish gray to yellowish color, with a rather thick, robust skin and a rich bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: average and regular.

Maturation: second half of September.

FAVORITA

FAVORITA

Synonyms: Furmentin Della Valle Belbo, Favorita Bianca Di Conegliano, Vermentino, Pigato.

Historical Notes: uncovering the origins of this grape is difficult. It is nevertheless already grown in the 19th Century in the Piedmont zones of Albese, Roero and the Langhe. It was pointed out by Molon in 1906, and in the past was eaten as a table grape.

Characteristics: medium-large leaf, with five lobes. The smooth upper surface is crimped and furrowed, with a bottle green color. The cluster is medium-large. The berries are spherical, of an intense amber yellow color, with a thick skin, and often covered with a rich bloom.

Vigor: medium high, especially in clayey soils, where it excels, giving the best of itself; better therefore on light and dry soils.

Productiveness: abundant and regular.

Maturation: end of September, beginning of October.

FIANO

FIANO

Synonyms: Fiore Mendillo, Fiana or Foiana, Santa Sofia, Latino Bianco, Minutola.

Historical Notes: an ancient grape variety, it was already noted and cultivated by the Latin tribes who settled in southern Italy. It was felt that its origins are to be found in the zone of Lapìo, in the hills lying to the east of Avellino.
Its name appears to come from "apianae" (beloved of bees) grapes grown by the Romans.

Characteristics: the leaves are orbicular, medium sized, with three lobes, with the lobes just slightly outlined, and a smooth upper surface. The clusters are small to average, tightly put together, pyramid shape with a quite evident side bunch. The golden yellow berries are average sized, with an ellipsoid shape; with a skin resistant to breaking, covered with a very light bloom.

Vigor: good, it thrives in deep, loose, volcanic soils.

Productiveness: good and regular
