Synonyms: Girò Sardo, Girone di Spagna, Girone Comune, Nieddu Allu, Axina Barxa, Vargiu (because of its varying color).

Historical Notes: it is perhaps of mutation of Alicante-Grenache. It was imported from Spain around 1400, together with the Nasco grape. It is a grape variety which is throughout all of Sardinia, but is slowly disappearing.

Characteristics: the leaf is averaged sized, with five lobes and rarely with three lobes, and has a dark green upper surface. The cluster is of medium to large sized, pyramid-shaped, with shoulders and somewhat loosely put together. The average-sized berries are round and have blackish-deep purple color.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: average and even prolific but irregular.

Synonyms: Recanicu, Grecanio, Grecanicu Biancu.

Historical Notes: this grape variety is evidently of Greek origin, with many affinities to Garganega and very different the Greco grape. It is currently grown in the Trappani area and is also spreading into the areas surrounding Palermo.

Characteristics: the leaf is of average size, with five lobes. The upper surface is marked by veins. The cluster is of medium-long to quite long, cylindrical, with side bunches, and loosely put together. The berries are of average size, and are more or less spherical, greenish yellow with the parts most exposed to the sun tending toward pink. The skin is thick and covered with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: optimum.

Productiveness: abundant.

Synonyms: Grechetto Nostrale or Greco Spoletino, Greco Bianco di Perugia, Stroppa Volpe, Pulce.

Historical Notes: the origins of this grape variety are unknown however it is quite widespread throughout central Italy.

Characteristics: average sized leaves, elongated, pentagon shaped, with three lobes and in some cases with five lobes or tending toward the round form. The upper surface is crimped and furrowed as well as ruffled with an intense green color. The size of the cluster ranges from medium to almost small. It has the shape of a cylinder or a cylindrical cone and is loosely put together to semi-loose. The berries are of average size and oval shaped. The skin is thin but resistant to breaking. The grapes are yellowish with an average bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: from average to abundant, but not consistent.

Synonyms: Greco del Vesuvio, Greco della Torre, Greco di Tufo, Grieco, Greco di Napoli.

Historical Notes: it is a noble grape variety of extremely ancient origins. It was cultivated as was noted at the beginning of Roman history, on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius and appears to reach back to the 1st Century BC It would seem to have derived from the "aminea gemella" family of grapes described in Virgil's "Georgics".

Characteristics: it has a medium-large orbicular leaf, with three lobes and only occasionally with five. The smooth upper surface of the leaf is quite marked by green veins. The cluster is medium sized or small, cylindrical or slightly cone-shaped, tightly put together, often with a very developed side bunch. The berry is medium sized to small, spheroid, and irregular. The grape's skin is rather thick, of a yellowish gray color or in the parts exposed to sun, amber gray, covered with a rich bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: abundant.

Synonyms: Marcigliana Nera, Marzigliano (in the province of Catanzaro).

Historical Notes: its origins are uncertain but most probably, it was introduced by the Greeks. It is especially grown in Calabria.

Characteristics: the leaf is cut by very small teeth, with five lobes, and has a light green upper surface. The clusters tends to be cylindrical but it is also cone-shaped and may either be simple or have slight shoulders. The berries have a flattened shape and a black skin.

Vigor: medium.

Productiveness: regular.

Synonyms: Barbesino, Verbesino, Balestra, Arlandino, Girondino, Rossetto.

Historical Notes: its origins are certainly to be found in the Piedmont hills of Asti and Casale Monferrato. The first written mention of this grape date back to the 17th Century.

Characteristics: medium sized leaf, with three lobes and some times with five. The upper surface is smooth and hairless, dark green and crimped. The cluster is medium-large, compact, with either a cylindrical or pyramid-like shape. The cluster frequently has two side bunches. The berries are fairly small, slightly oval, of a red-purple color and covered with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: medium-good.

Productiveness: good but very irregular.

Historical Notes: most probably from Apulia; it was then imported to Marsala after the phylloxera invasion, where it is still grown, and from whence it spread to other areas of Sicily.

Characteristics: the leaf is of average size, pentagonal, with rounded edges, sometimes almost orbicular. The leaf has five lobes or sometimes approaches the round form. The smooth upper surface is hairless, not shiny, and of an intense green color. The cluster is medium sized, cylindrical and cone shaped, either with a single bunch or sometimes with side shoulders. The clusters are loosely put together or slightly loose. Berries are medium to large sized, spheroid, and regular. The berries have a thick and robust, transparent skin, of a golden-yellow color, irregularly distributed on the grape, with a light bloom.

Vigor: outstanding

Productiveness: good and consistent.

Historical Notes: there is no certain information concerning its origins, even experts are included to hold that it came from Sicily. Currently it is especially grown in the province of Napoli (Naples).

Characteristics: Medium sized leaf, pentagonal, sometimes orbicular, with three lobes, with a smooth, green upper surface. Average-sized cluster, elongated, cone-shaped, either with a single bunch or in some cases with a shoulder, of an average compactness. The berries are of average sized, slightly ovoid, regular, with a skin that is resistant to breakage of various colors, ranging from greenish to amber yellow with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: regular.

Historical Notes: it was imported into the area of Ostuni of Apulia from the area of Martina Franca, towards the beginning of this century by a farmer of the area who in fact had the nickname of "Impigno".

Characteristics: medium- sized leaf, pentagonal, with five lobes, with a smooth, opaque, bottle green upper surface. Medium sized clusters, either in the form of a single bunch or with shoulders, fairly compact. The berries are ovoid, regular; the skin is thin, susceptible to breaking easily, of a greenish amber color, without bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: good, abundant.

Synonyms: Riesling Renano X Pinot Bianco ( Pinot Blanc).
Historical Notes: an interesting crossing, obtained by Prof. Luigi Manzoni, between 1930 and 1935, at the Scuola Enologica› (Enology School) of Conegliano, by crossing Riesling with Pinot Bianco ( Pinot Blanc).

Characteristics: medium sized leaf, pentagonal, with five lobes. Small clusters, short and squat with a long side bunch. The berries are medium to small, spherical, with a skin which is resistant to breaking, and are of a yellowish color tending toward green with a heavy bloom.

Historical Notes: a grape variety obtained by crossing Barbera and Cabernet Franc, by the enologist from Bergamo Riccard Terzi

Characteristics: average-sized leaves, elongated pentagon shaped, with five lobes. The cluster of medium size, of average compactness, pyramid-shaped, sometimes with one or very pronounced side bunches.

Vigor: considerable

Productiveness: good and consistent
