Historical Notes: the grape variety has been grown from time immemorial on the Bolzano Gries plain. In the 17th Century, the monks of the Benedictine Monastery of Muri (near Bolzano›), praised Lagrein, defining it as the best of the era. Currently it is widely grown throughout Trentino-AltoAdige.

Characteristics: leaf larger than average, pentagonal, with three lobes, a smooth upper surface, opaque, of a dark green color. The cluster is slightly pyramid-shaped, sometimes short, squat, with one or two shoulders, of average looseness. Average sized berries, of a regular ovoid shape, thick skin, resistant to breakage, of bluish, black, with a rich bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: abundant, but not always consistent.

Historical Notes: it derivation reaches back to the "Labrusco" grape, that is to say the spontaneous vitis silvestris grape of the Apennines.

Characteristics: less than average sized leaf, almost without sinuses or with only suggestion of three lobes, a smooth upper surface of an opaque green color. The cluster is average sized, elongated, pyramid shaped, with a side bunch, generally very loosely put together. The berries are average sized, slightly oval, with a thick skin resistant to breaking, of bluish to black color with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: very vigorous

Productiveness: scarce, discrete only in the years in which the coulure is less marked.

Synonyms: Lambrusco di Castelvetro, Lambrusco di Spezzano.

Historical Notes: probably derived from wild grapes ( vitis silvestris), propagated with seed and successively domesticated. Widely grown in the region of Emilia in the central provinces of Modena and Mantova.

Characteristics: average leaf, rounded, pentagonally shaped, but also without sinuses or with three lobes, the upper surface is ruffled and of a dark green color. The cluster is average sized, elongated, loosely put together, pyramid shaped, with a very pronounced shoulder. The berries are average sized, sub-oval; with a very thick skin which is resistant to breaking. The color is blue to black with a heavy bloom.
Vigor: good

Productiveness: abundant and constant.

Historical Notes: probably originated from the "vitis labrusche", the spontaneous wild grape vines of the Apennines. Its name probably comes from "Villa Maestri", in the commune of S. Pancrazio (Parma), from whence it then spread for the most part in the area of Modena and Reggio.

Characteristics: average leaf, with three lobes or approaching the round form, reddish veins on both sides of the leaf, with teeth not very pronounced. The clusters are of average sized, elongated, cylindrical or pyramid shaped, generally with a shoulder or side bunch, somewhat compact. The berries are slightly small, not quite round, with a skin resistant to breaking, of a blue to black color with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: considerable .

Productiveness: prolific and consistent.

Characteristics: leaves of average size, tending towards roundish, with three lobes, and sinuses which are not very pronounced. Clusters range from average to large, elongated, cylindrical-pyramid shaped, of average compactness. Berries of average size, spherical; with a thick skin which is resistance to breaking of a blue to black color, with a rich bloom.

Vigor: considerable .

Productiveness: regular and abundant

Historical Notes: like the other Lambrusco grape varieties, it probably came from wild (Labrusco) vines, that were spontaneously spread throughout the Apennines.

Characteristics: leaf of average size, pentagonal, with three lobes, with sinuses that are not very pronounced, the upper surface is ruffled and marked by veins, of an intense green color, opaque. Medium-sized cluster, cylindrical, compact, often with shoulders. Generally average sized berries, spherical, sturdy skin, of a bluish to black color, with a rich bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: abundant and consistent.

Synonyms: Lambrusco di Viadana, Grappello Ruberti, Montecchio.

Historical Notes: this grape variety probably derived form wild grape vines, was already noted in ancient times and was first mentioned by Pier de' Crescenzi in 1300. In the 16th Century Solderini and in the last century Acerbi treated the various Lambrusco varieties in greater detail. Currently it is mainly grown in the area around Mantova and also to a lesser degree near Cremona.

Characteristics: average sized leaf, pentagonal shaped, with three lobes, the upper surface is smooth, opaque. Medium-sized clusters, cylinder shaped, rather compact. Average sized berries, spherical, with a thick and sturdy skin, of a bluish black color distributed uniformly, and with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: abundant and consistent.

Historical Notes: this grape variety owes its name to the fact that it is widely grown in the province of Macerata. It is a grape variety hat was already noted in the Marches from the days of the ancient Romans and probably derives from the Grecco variety which in turn descended from the "aminee" grape varieties cultivated in the plain of Faleria (now Falerone).

Characteristics: large leaf, orbicular, with five lobes. The cluster is average to large, compact, cylindrical or cylindrical-cone shaped. Average sized berries, round, thick skin, resistant to breaking, of golden yellow color, with average bloom.

Vigor: medium or high.

Productiveness: abundant and consistent.

Historical Notes: a vine variety which has been cultivated for several centuries and is
widely grown on the Chianti hills, from it is held to originate.

Characteristics: average sized to large leaf, pentagonal, with five lobes, with a smooth upper surface, of a deep green color. It has large clusters, compact, elongated, pyramid shaped, normally with two side bunches. Medium to small sized berries, spherical, regular form; with a skin which is resistant to breaking, with a straw yellow color with greenish streaks or golden yellow, with a rich bloom.

Vigor: medium

Productiveness: abundant and consistent.

Historical Notes: like all the "Malvasia" grape varieties, its name comes from an Italian corruption of the Greek port of Monemvasia which was in the Middle Ages, a busy and natural
entrepôt for wines; this variety was imported into Italy, as of at least the year 1202, the golden age of the Venetian Republic.

Characteristics: average sized leaf, orbicular, with three lobes or rarely with five lobes, upper surface smooth and hairless. Average sized clusters, cone-shaped, frequently with side pyramids, tightly or slightly put together subject to a slight coulure. Berries of average size, round, yellowish color, speckled with brown spots and points, with an average bloom.

Vigor: abundant and consistent.

Productiveness: ranges from scarce to average.
