Synonyms: Malvasia, Malvasia Bianca Aromatica, Malvasia di Candia a Sapore di Moscato, Malvasia di Candida.

Historical Notes: in the ampelographic classification the citation "Malvasia di Candia", while it is frequent that one finds a "Malvasia a Sapore Moscato" (literally Muscat flavored Malvasia). It was cited by Bramieri (1818) as a "malvagìa dal grappolo assai spargolo" malvasia with a loosely put together cluster, by Rovasenda› (1877) as "Malvasia cultivated in Alessandria (Piedmont), similar to that of Asti, which has a taste like Muscat", and also by Molon (1906) who describes it as a "Malvasia di Alessandria". It is widely grown in the hilly areas of Piacenza› and Parma.

Characteristics: leaf of average size, pentagonal, with five lobes, smooth upper surface, green, slightly shiny. Average to large cluster, elongated, pyramid shaped, with numerous wings or side bunches, loosely put together. Round, average sized berries, regular, thick skin, resistant to breaking, with a rich bloom, opal-like golden yellow color, very similar to Muscat grapes.

Vigor: generally average to high.

Productiveness: average, owing to frequent coulure, but consistent.

Synonyms: Malvasia Nera di Piemonte, Moscatellina.
Historical Notes: a Greek grape variety widely grown throughout Italy. In Piedmont, the cultivation of Malvasia a Bacca Bianca (white berried Malvasia) was abandoned after the infestation of phylloxera. Malvasia di Casorzo, together with Malvasi di Schierano, are black- berried grapes and the areas where they are grown are: for the first, the provinces of Asti and Alessandria, while for the second on the area of Asti.

Characteristics: medium sized leaf, cluster relatively large, somewhat loosely put together, pyramid shaped, with wings. Average sized berries, which are ellipsoidal, with a bluish to black color, with a heavy bloom, and aromatic pulp.

Vigor: outstanding.

Productiveness: abundant and consistent. Good resistance to bad weather.

Historical Notes: it appears to have reached the island of Salina ( Lipari›) when it was introduced by Greek colonists toward the year 588 BC

Characteristics: average sized leaf, rounded edges, with five lobes, with a smooth, green, upper surface. Medium-sized cluster, long, cylindrical or with cone-shaped trunk form, a simple bunch, of average looseness. Small to average sized berries, round or flattened, golden yellow skin, with an aromatic taste.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: not very consistent

Historical Notes: grape variety of the large Malvasia family, certainly of Greek origins, even if its exact birthplace is unknown. Especially grown in the areas of Schierano and Passerano Marmorito, in the province of Asti.

Characteristics: average sized leaf, pentagonal, elongated, with five lobes or sometimes with three, with a smooth and hairless upper surface. The cluster is of average length, and average compactness, in the shape of a pyramid-like trunk. Average sized berries, slightly ellipsoid, with a blue to blackish skin, with an average bloom, rather thick and resistant to breaking.

Vigor: medium to high

Productiveness: from medium to abundant.

Characteristics: average to large sized leaf, either approaching the round form or with three lobes, with a smooth upper surface, light green. The cluster is average sized, almost cylindrical, fairly compact or slightly loose, often with a side bunch. Average sized berries spherical, regular, of average resistance to breaking, yellowish green with a rich bloom.

Vigor: considerable .

Productiveness: abundant and fairly consistent.

Historical Notes: Malvasia Nera is fairly widely grown, in the province of Brindisi and Lecce. It belongs to the large Malvasia family of Greek origin. It arrived in Apulia from the Greek port city of Monemvasia, in southern Greece.

Characteristics: large leaf, with five lobes, with smooth upper surface, opaque. Medium-sized cluster, cone-shaped, either a simple bunch or with side bunches. Average sized berries, spherical, regular, with a skin resistant to breaking, of a black to deep purple color with an average bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: average but consistent.

Synonyms: Berzemino, Berzamino, Marzemina d' Isera, Marzemino Gentile, Barzemina.

Historical Notes: unknown before 1400, Marzemino first appeared in the Veneto area and then in the Bresica region. At the end of the last century Marzeminon Padovano or Negron were the most widely grown varieties, certainly more productive but of scant quality. Currently in the Val Lagarina, in the province of Trento, only the Marzemino "Gentile", (Noble) is grown, especially in Isera and Volano, the areas which are the most suited to this variety.

Characteristics: leaf of average size, very consistent, with three lobes, pentagonal, with the central part more elongated, with the upper surface a beautiful intense green color; the edge is formed by quite pronounced and irregular teeth The cluster is of average to large size, slightly loose, cylindrical to pyramid shaped with one or two very large side bunches, the characteristic "rece" or ears. The berries are of average size, of regular form, with a skin that is thin but resistant to breaking of a bluish to black color with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: considerable .

Productiveness: good and consistent.

Synonyms: Merlò in Italy (Veneto), in other Countries Vitrai›, Merlau, Bigney.

Historical Notes: grape variety of French origin, particularly in the area around Gironde and more precisely that of Médoc. The first news of its introduction in Italy dates back to the middle of last century. Indeed, around 1880, it is present in the ampelographic collection of the School of Viticultural and Enology of Conegliano. In Italy, Merlot is mainly grown in northern areas, and is currently one of the most widely grown grape varieties in the world.

Characteristics: average leaf, pentagonal, three lobes or with five lobes, with a smooth upper surface, light green, opaque. Cluster of average size and compactness, with a pyramid shaped, with one or two side bunches, between 15 and 20 cm long. Medium-sized berries, spherical, regular; good resistance to breaking, of bluish to black color, with an average bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: abundant and consistent.

Historical Notes: the first mention we have of this grape variety reaches back to Pollini (1818). The name comes from "mulinara" (miller) because the heavy bloom that covers the grapes makes them appear to be covered with flour. Presently it is widely grown in the province of Verona.

Characteristics: fairly large leaf, with three lobes, sometimes with a hint of two other lobes, with a lower surface almost without down. The cluster is of average size, pyramid shaped, with two short wings, with the right amount of looseness. Medium-sized berries, with a red to purplish skin, with a heavy bloom.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: abundant and consistent.
