MOSCATO GIALLO

MOSCATO GIALLO

Synonyms: Goldmuskateller, Moscat or Moscatel del Trentino, Moscato Sirio in the hills of Colli Euganei.

Historical Notes: certainly the most commonly known grape variety in ancient times. The most commonly mentioned grapes for which we find the most traces and mentions in the ancient texts are for Muscat. It appears that the Muscat grape came from Greece. In the times of the ancient Romans, Cato spoke of it and was called "apianae" grape (beloved of bees), from the bees which flocked around ripened and fragrant bunches. In the Renaissance, their name became transformed into Moscato grapes, it would appear because of the similarity of appearance with "Musk", an animal essence then in use and gave rise to an important number of real and genuine varieties: Moscato Bianco, Moscato Giallo, Moscato Nero, Moscato Rosa. To all these varieties man has also lent his hand, which has led to a great deal of crossings being developed. Until the end of the 18th Century, ampelographic experts sought to list them and classify them. In 1893, Molon managed to distinguish some 24 different varieties.

Characteristics: medium-sized leaf, with three lobes, sometimes approaching the round form, with a smooth lower surface. The cluster is of average size or fairly large, pyramid-shaped, with wings, loosely put together. Medium-sized berry, spherical, fairly intense golden yellow.

Vigor: good.

Productiveness: good.

Maturation: end of September.

MÜLLER THURGAU

MÜLLER THURGAU

Historical Notes: the grape variety was obtained by crossing Riesling with Sylvaner, by Prof. Hermann Müller of the Swiss Canton of Thurgau. The researcher who in 1876, was the director of director of plant physiology at the vinicultural station at Geisenheim Germany, returned to Switzerland in Wadenswill, in 1891, always at the head of a fruit growing research institute, where he completed research into this kind of grape variety. It was introduced into Italy in 1939, and spread rapidly.

Characteristics: average size leaf, pentagon shaped, with five lobes and more rarely with three lobes, the upper surface is smooth. The clusters are small, cylindrical-pyramid shaped, often with a very pronounced side bunch, of average looseness. Average sized berries, ellipsoid, with a rich bloom, of a greenish yellow color, with specks, and pinkish on the sides exposed to the sun.

Vigor: considerable .

NEBBIOLO

NEBBIOLO

Synonyms: Nebiolo, Nebbiolo Del Piemonte, Nebbiolo Di Carema, Nebieul, Nebieu,Spanna, Picoutener, Chiavennasca.

Historical Notes: the first mention of this grape variety to back to 1300. According some, the name Nebbiolo derives from the Italian word " nebbia" or fog, in as much as its grapes seem to be covered by clouds of bloom; according to others instead the name would appear to be in relation to the late maturation of the grape, which often requires it being harvested in the season of autumn fogs. Another, more ancient version, has Nebbiolo deriving its name from "nobile" or noble, since this grape variety is makes a wine that is "generous, delightful and sweet".

Characteristics: average sized leaf, or larger whose shape is between pentagonal and orbicular, with three lobes, smooth upper surface, opaque, bottle green. Medium- sized cluster or sometimes larger, in the shape of an elongated pyramid, with side bunches, a bit compact. Often with a very large side bunch. Medium-sized berries, round but with a tendency toward ellipsoidal. The grape's skin is thin but resistant to breaking, of a deep purple color, with a heavy bloom which makes it sometimes appear grey.

Vigor: more than average.

Productiveness: a bit inconsistent.

Maturation: late, from the middle of October.
